Carlsbad is often referred to as "Village by the Sea". It is an expansive city spread out over 45 square miles.
With its rolling hills and seven miles of scenic coastline, it is enjoyed by many residents and visitors alike.
Here you will find old-world charm in a city where some of the oldest buildings date back to 1887.
Carlsbad is located 30 miles north of the city of San Diego and about 80 miles south of Los Angeles. It is an easy
and pleasant drive from either city.
The 19th century Karlsbad Spa, located in Europe, inspired the name for Carlsbad, California. According to the story,
a well was drilled In 1880 by a famous seacaptain who struck water and noticed that it had similar mineral properties
as the water in Karlsbad, Bohemia. That's how Carlsbad got its name.
Carlsbad is a charming city by the sea and attracts guests from around the world. It is home to two world class spa
resorts: La Costa Resort & Spa and Four Seasons Resort, Aviara. It is also a flower lover's delight and is a
major growing region for poinsettias. Beginning in March and ongoing for several months, flower lovers can enjoy
arrival of spring which brings a bountiful array of colors to the local flower fields. People come from all over
to get a glimpse of nature's beauty. This is where the bird of paradise got its start and is the city's official flower.

More about Carlsbad ... |
Besides the flower fields, visitors and residents can also enjoy Carlsbad's Legoland theme park. Carlsbad has a
downtown shopping village with a European flair, beautiful stretches of beach, and a variety of fun things for
families to do. If you enjoy a round of golf, there are many golf courses to choose from. There is Aviara,
an 18-hole public course, Rancho Carlsbad, a public 18-hole executive course and Encinitas Ranch, 18-hole public
course. LaCosta Resort guests can enjoy two 18-hole courses and nearby Shadowridge in Vista
features an 18-hole private course. Carlsbad has safe communities and also has no earthquake fault
zone (a region with a higher likelihood of earthquake activity). It is easily accessible by car, train,
or plane.
Although the "village" dates back more than 100 years, the City was incorporated July 16, 1952. At that time,
Carlsbad had a population of approximately 7,000 people and covered 7.5 square miles. Since its incorporation,
the City has grown substantially in population and size (through annexations). As of January 1, 1998, the population
of Carlsbad was 73,688 and the City encompassed approximately 42 square miles. There will be no foreseeable growth
in the land size of Carlsbad because all County lands have been annexed. At build out, sometime beyond the year
2010, there will be at most 54,599 residential units in Carlsbad, housing approximately 135,000 residents. The
dwelling unit cap was ratified by the voters of Carlsbad in the November 1986 election and can only be increased
by a majority vote of the people.
Industries in the area include a major regional shopping center, 16 auto dealers, 25 hotels offering 2,200 rooms
for tourist lodging, high technology, multimedia and biomedical businesses, electronics, golf apparel and equipment
manufacturers, several business and light industry parks, and numerous land developers building single and
multi-family housing in a variety of community settings. Carlsbad residents enjoy the benefits of a full service city.
The City of Carlsbad follows the general laws of the State of California rather than having a specific charter of its
own. It is a municipal corporation following the Council-Manager form of government The City Council is the
community's legislative body. The Council enacts laws know as ordinances; sets policies known as resolutions;
and, adopts an annual budget. The Mayor and four City Council members are elected city-wide by registered voters in
the City of Carlsbad. These officials typically serve four-year terms. The City of Carlsbad provides a full
range of services that you would expect with a municipality including police, fire, parks and recreation, library,
planning and zoning, building and engineering, and various maintenance services. The City provides through the
Carlsbad Municipal Water District, which is a subsidiary of the City district. The City Council serves as
the Board of Directors for the Carlsbad Municipal Water District. The Organizational Structure for the City
of Carlsbad provides specialized support for five major services areas. If you are interested in the goals and
objectives of each department, they are outlined in the annual operating budget. This is on file at the
City Clerk Office and also at each library.

Carlsbad's Village downtown offers plenty of restaurants and unique shopping. The Carlsbad Street Faire is held twice each year, the first Sunday in November and May. It is the largest one-day street fair in all of California. Over 75,000 people attend this event. You'll find the streets lined with over 800 vendors of food and arts-and-crafts gifts. Another big event takes place one weekend each year in July at the Tamarack state beach. You'll find a big seaside celebration of colors and competition and over 10,000 people joining in on the magic. |
